·      Tsunami (tidal waves) are long-wave length, long period sea waves produced by the sudden or abrupt movement of large volumes of water

·      The Japanese word for a great sea wave, ‘tsunami’, has came into general use to identify a seismically generated sea wave.

·      Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions (including detonations of underwater nuclear devices), landslides and other mass movements, meteorite ocean impacts or similar impact events, and other disturbances above or below water all have the potential to generate a tsunami

·      Tsunamis can also travel thousands of kilometers across open ocean and wreak destruction on far shores hours after the earthquake that generated them. Most destructive tsunamis are caused by earthquakes of magnitude 7.5 or more.
