The process of combining of two lighter nuclei to give a heavier nucleus is called nuclear fusion. Large amount of energy is required to initiate the fusion reaction. Thus nuclear fusion is also called thermonuclear reaction. Hydrogen bomb is based on the principle of nuclear fusion and it is much more powerful than atom bomb. The Phenomenon of breaking a heavy nucleus into two light nuclei of almost equal masses along with the release of huge amount of energy is called nuclear fission. It was discovered by Otto Hahn and Strassman in 1939.
