The Human Genome Project is the largest ever biology research collaboration. The Project completed the final sequence of the three billion ‘letters’ in the genetic code for a human being in February 2001. The ‘letters’ are formed by the combination of certain chemical linkages in the two strands of the gene. Humans share 99.99% of the code; 0.01% is the tiny percentage of genes which vary among humans and it is this difference that accounts for all the differences between people.
