·      Cloning is the process of producing many identical organisms or clones (clone means exact carbon copy or copies of a single parent)

·      It is the production of one individual organism from a nucleus, cell or asexual offshot or another

·      Ian Wilmut and his colleagues at the Roslin Research Institute in Scotland cloned the first sheep Dolly

·      The young one of Dolly, named Polly, was born in 1998

·      Ian Wilmut is considered as the father of cloning

·      Carbon copy is the first cloned cat, in 2001, at Texas.

·      Cell cloning is based on the property of totipotency (in plant) or pleuripotency (in animals)

·      Totipotency is a potential ability of plant cell to grow into complete plant. Pleuripotency is the potential ability of an animal cell to develop into any type of cell in the animal body.

·      Biotechnology is the application to industry of advances made in the techniques and instruments of research in the biological science. The use of living organisms or of substances obtained from them in industry is known as Biotechnology.

·      It is closely linked to the development in the 1970s of genetic engineering (the directed alternation of genetic material). Substances that have been produced in this manner include human interferon (a natural virus – fighting substance), human insulin and human growth hormone.

·      Recombinant – DNA techniques made an evident impact on medical diagnosis and oncology. Another important use of genetic engineering is the production of bacteria used to biodegrade oil spills and toxic waste.

·      In 1983, an American company Eli Lily, produced the first genetically engineered insulin called humulin with the help of Escherichia Coli (or E-Coli)

The advent of DNA sequencing has significantly accelerated biological research and discovery. The rapid speed of sequencing attained with modern DNA sequencing technology has been instrumental in the sequencing of the human genome, in the Human Genome Project. The first DNA sequences were obtained in the early 1970s by academic researcher using laborious methods based on two – dimensional chromatography.

HGP was launched in 1988, with the Nobel laureate Dr. James D. Watson as the Director and the project envisaged.

The Human Genome Project originally aimed to map the nucleotides contained in a human haploid reference genome (more than three billion)

Objective of the Human Genome Project is to understand the genetic makeup of the human species, the project has also focused on several other nonhuman organisms such as E. coli, the fruit fly and the laboratory mouse.

Project identified and mapped the approximately 20000-25000 genes of the human genome from the physical and functional stand point.
