DNA testing is used for identification of individuals on the basis of their respective DNA profiles. It is also used for parental testing and rape investigation. Although 99.9% of human DNA sequences are the same in every person, enough of the DNA is different to distinguish one individual from another. The DNA testing technique was first reported in 1984 by Sir Alec Jeffreys in England. Jeffrey’s technique of DNA fingerprinting is now used to identify criminals in forensic laboratories. It is also used to determine paternity or maternity, that is who the true biological father or mother of a child is.
