SILENT VALLEY NATINAL PARK (1984)

·      Silent Valley National Park situated in Palakkad district in Nilgiri Mountains of Kerala.

·      The park is called a Sairandhrivanam in local Malayalam language as in Mahabharata Draupadi was Sairandhri during the exile period.

·      The British named the area Silent Valley because of a perceived absence of noisy Cicadas.

·      Silent Valley is home to the largest population of Lion-tailed Macaque, an endangered species of Primate.

·      Rare bird species found here include Ceylon Frogmouth and Great Indian Hornbill.

 

ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK (1972,1978, N.P)

·      Eravikulam National Park is 97 sq.km in extent. It is situated along the crest of the Western Ghats in the High Ranges of Idukki district.

·      A sanctuary is the home for endangered mountain goat, the nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrious)

 

ANAMUDI SHOLA NATIONAL PARK (2003)

·      Anamudi Shola National Park is a part of the Marayoor village in the Devikulam Taluk in Idukki district. It covers a total area of 7.5 square kilometers.

·      This park is a very high rainfall area with annual average rainfall of about 4500 millimeters (180in)

·      The park contains highly endemic flora, including a plant commonly known as ‘Neelakkurinji’ (Strobilanthes Kunthianus)

 

MATHIKETTAN SHOLA NATIONAL PARK (2003)

·      Mathikettan Shola National Park is a 12.82 km² national park in Poopara village of Udumbanchola taluk in Idukki district.

·      The name Mathikettan derives from the Tamil word meaning ‘mind confuser’, as the local people say that one forgets the path once he enters into the park.

·      Mathikettan area is part of the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR) notified in the Travancore Government gazette 24^th August 1897, wherein the area was constituted as a Reserve Forest under section 18 of Regulation II of 1068.

·      Earlier the control over the land rested with the Revenue department and tree growth with the forest department. But in 2002, Government gave the administrative control of the land to the Forest department considering the unique nature of the Shola forests in Mathikettan and its importance as an elephant corridor.

 

PAMBADUM SHOLA NATIONAL PARK (2003)

·      The smallest National Park in the state covers only an area of 1.32 sq.km. This park is situated in the Marayoor village of Idukki district.

·      It is located in the junction between the Palani and Cardamom Hills.

·      Highly elusive and endangered, endemic small carnivore the Nilgiri Marten is seen here.
