·      The Idukki Hydroelectric Project is the biggest hydroelectric Project in Kerala

·      The dam stands between the two mountains – Kuruvanmala (839)m and Kurathimala (925)m. It is built on the Periyar River.

·      It started generating power on 4th October 1975.

·      It comprises of three dams at Idukki, Cheruthony and Kulamavu and related systems.

·      The power house at Moolamattom is the longest underground power station in India and the pressure shaft is the largest in the country.

·      The Idukki dam is one of the highest dams in the world and the first arch dam in India. Cheruthony is the largest and highest gravity dam in Kerala.

·      The Government of Canada aided in the building of the dam with long term loans and grants.

SABARIGIRI (335MV)

·      The Sabarigiri project originally commissioned in 1968 is located on the Pamba & Kakki rivers in the Moozhiyar Dense Forest of Pathanamthitta.

·      The second largest hydel power station in the State. It has three reservoirs namely Kochu Pampa, Anathode and Kakki.

·      The catchment area at the power house is 316km². the height and length of the dam is 110m and 336m respectively.

·      It has 6 units of 50 MW each with a mean annual inflow of 824 MCM. It has a firm power of 139 MW.

·      Kerala State Electricity Board commissioned the project in 1966-67.

IDAMALAYAR (75MW)

·      The Idamalayar Dam is a multipurpose concrete gravity dam located on the Idamalayar River, a tributary of the Periyar River in Ernakulam District.

·      Literal meaning of Idamalayar Dam in Malayalam language is “monster dam”

·      The large reservoir created by the Idamalayar Dam is operated by the Kerala State Electricity Board.

·      The catchment area at the dam is 381 km². the height and length of the dam is 91m and 373m respectively.

·      Idamalayar power house has 2 units of 37.5 MW each, with mean annual inflow of 1370 MCM.

·      KSEB commissioned the project in 1987.

SHOLAYAR (54MW) 1965

·      Two Sholayar named dams are there, one in Tamil Nadu and the other in Kerala. Kerala’s Sholayar is commonly known locally as Chalakkudy Dam.

·      Sholayar Dam (Hydro Electric Dams) which is built in Chalakkudy river originates from the Anamudi Mountain ranges.

·      The catchment area at the dam is 186.5 km²

·      Sholayar power house has 3 units of 18 MW each, with mean annual inflow of 1710 MCM.

·      KSEB commissioned the project in 1966-68.

PALLIVASAL (37.5MW)

·      The Pallivasal hydroelectric project commissioned in 1939 utilizes the waters of Mudirampuzha river the important tributary of Periyar.

·      It is the first power station of the State with an installation capacity of 13500 KW

KUTTIYADI (225MW)

·      Kuttiyadi Hydroelectric Power Plant India is located at 29 km east of Vadakara, Kozhikode district.

·      Kuttiyadi is a masonry gravity dam.

·      It is the first hydroelectric project in the Malabar Region. It started functioning in 1972

·      The project is in Kuttiyadi river.

·      50 megawatts Kuttiyadi Extension project was started in 2001
