·      Much of the forest cover of Kerala is spread over the Western Ghats.

·      51% of the total forest cover is in the southern districts and the remaining 49 percent is in the central and northern regions

·      Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts have the largest area under forest cover.

·      Alappuzha is the only district without any area under forest cover.

·      Kerala has a total recorded forest cover of 11,125.59 sq.km which is 28.90% of the total land area of the state. This is greater than the national coverage of 19.50%.

·      The 11,125.59 sq.km of forest cover includes 9157.10 sq.km reserve forests, 214.31 sq.km proposed reserve and 1754.18 sq.km vested forest. Of the recorded forest area, the effective (actual) forest area in Kerala is only 9400 sq.km.

·      The forest may be divided into:

Ø Tropical Wet Evergreen Forests

Ø Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests

Ø Tropical Dry Deciduous Forests

Ø Mountain Sub Tropical

Ø Plantations

 

FOREST AND WILDLIFE DEPARTMENT

·      Kerala Forest Department (KFD) is one of the few oldest and important administrative organs of the state with its Headquarters at Thiruvananthapuram.

·      Major subjects assigned to the department are Biodiversity Conservation, Forest Protection, Wildlife Management and Research, Forest Development, Social Forestry, Forest Vigilance and Evaluation, Eco-development and Tribal Welfare, Planning and Research, Tribal Rehabilitation and Special Afforestation, Infrastructure and Human Resource Development, FMIS, General Administration including Recruitment and Establishment matters etc…

·      The Kerala forest department is headed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests.

·      For general administration there are forest circles headed by chief Conservators of forests, under their jurisdiction Forest Divisions are controlled by divisional Forest Officers.

·      Each Division is further sub divided into Forest Ranges manned by Forest Rangers reporting to the Divisional Forest Officers.
