KERALA PSC / ASTRONOMY / PLANETS IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM / NOTES

·       The planets are celestial bodies revolving around the sun. Each of them revolves around the sun along a definite path called ‘orbit’.

·       Orbits of the planets around the sun are elliptical

·       Now there are 8 Planets in the solar system. They are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

·       Inner or Terrestrial planets have higher densities

·       Outer planets have lower densities

·       Earth is the largest of the inner planets and the densest of the planets

·       Mercury and Venus are termed as interior planets

·       The Outer planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are very big and also called Giant planets composed of hydrogen, helium, ammonia and methane

·       The maximum and minimum distance between the sun and the planet is termed as aphelion and perihelion.
