KERALA PSC / ASTRONOMY / THE SOLAR SYSTEM / NOTES

·       Composition of solar system:

The Sun contains 99.85% of all the matter in the solar system. The planets contain only 0.135% of the mars of the solar system. Jupiter contains more than twice the matter of all the other planets combined together. The satellites of the planets, comets, asteroids, meteoroids and the interplanetary medium constitute the remaining 0.015 per cent.

·       Solar System evolved 5 billion years ago

·       The Sun is the closest star to earth and is the centre of our solar system

·       The Sun with its planets, asteroids, comets etc…, constitute the solar system

·       Solar system consists of Sun, 8 Planets, 3 dwarf planets, their satellites, asteroids, comets and other bodies

·       The solar system moves with an average speed of 250 km/sec. It takes 250 million years to complete one revolution around the galactic centre. This period is known as a cosmic year

·       The following is the order of the size of planets from small to big: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Earth, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Jupiter

·       The direction of the planets in their revolution around the sun is also from West and East.
